We are tremendously excited to welcome in a new generation Vantage for 2024.The most dynamic and focused car in the Aston Martin core range. It is designed to deliver the most engaging and exciting driving experience.
Undoubtedly, the Vantage is the product in our range that is most likely to be used on track. Like previous generations, it will also be the base for our GT3 endurance racer so it needs to deliver at a competition level. Nevertheless, Vantage is a sporty car that can be used everyday or taken on long tours. When the mood takes you, it can instantly be dialled into a very serious sports car.
Aston Martin wanted to make a ferocious and dynamic car for those with an appetite for extreme driving but at the same time, it has been designed to provide a level of approachable usability. Comfort and refinement remain attributes that remain important in the mix.
Fundamentally Vantage has always been a great platform to deliver a great driving experience. It has a natural balance that gives it great controllability. Aston Martin have gone further by incorporating some very smart electronics. It is fitted with a 6 axis IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). This unit essentially measures the Vantage’s behaviour in high fidelity as part of the electronic stability control system. It enables a far more subtle interaction in terms of taming the Vantage’s immense power so that when it intervenes, it is far more subtle than previous generation systems.
How this is felt on the road is markedly different. Essentially, stability control systems of old cut power and applies brakes in quite a dramatic fashion which gives you a momentary pause in progress as you apply too much power. The new system has already realised you are beyond grip levels before it happens and so proactively trims power to prevent a slip or wheel spin and does so incredibly subtly. Therefore, it aids slicker deployment of power and can be finely adjusted to your taste.
There are also some dramatic changed to the styling. These are essentially performance driven. Instantly you notice a wider stance. The hips are 30mm wider which allows for a wider track, giving greater grip and stability. It also gives Vantage even more subtle menace. The stance is wonderful.
The front nose is dominated by the 30% larger front grille to allow for greater cooling. Vantage has 30% more power and this creates 10% more heat in the process. Therefore, more air through the grille manages this along with relocated bonnet vents that now sit just above the turbochargers.
The Vantage also gets new Matrix headlamps which manage their intense light output to ensure an incredibly strong beam is focused in front of you without dazzling other drivers. They are also beautiful in their jewel-like execution. We also think the front has hints of Aston Martin One-77 which is no bad thing!
You will notice that there are vents behind the front and rear arches. These vents reduce wheel arch pressure and lift along with aiding brake cooling. The rear end is also complemented by larger bore exhausts to match the extra muscle of this new generation Vantage.
To match the new look, there has been a dramatic upgrade under the bonnet. Whilst the engine remains a 4.0 twin-turbo V8, hand built by AMG to Aston Martin’s spec, much has changed. It is a very different engine with a new bottom end, new top end, new turbos, different cams, ancillaries.
The result of this work is:
Power: 665PS which is a 30% increase over previous gen Vantage
Torque: 800nm
Top Speed: 202 mph
0-60 in 3.4 seconds
With these colossal levels of power, and particularly torque, Aston Martin have introduced torque mapping. Essentially, this allows Aston Martin to adapt the level of torque deployed in each gear. The engine creates so much muscle at low revs that restricting torque in lower gears allows the tyres to find more traction rather than spinning the power away. This in turn gives stronger acceleration.
With the focus on delivering for serious drivers, much time and resource was concentrated on the chassis. Aston Martin were already working with strong ingredients from the previous generation but they have absolutely moved the game on.
We have mentioned that Vantage is a well-balanced car. To be more precise, the new gen Vantage is perfectly balanced with 50/50 weight distribution. Critically, it carries this weight intelligently too with 77% of the mass carried between the front and rear axles and very low with a centre of gravity just 49cm from the ground. Combined with a wheelbase 100mm shorter that DB12, this means that Vantage is extremely agile and controllable with this intense focus on mass-centralisation.
The next element needed to make car handle well is a stiff chassis. Aston Martin have been working with the bonded aluminium platform for around 20 years. The is technology taken from aerospace because it works so well. It has always provided immense strength (and safety) but further improvements were made at the following points:
The reason for chasing this strength is that it provides the perfect platform to mount the super-trick Bilstein DTX dampers and non-isolated steering column. Essentially, a stiff platform provides the ideal base to allow the dampers to work to their very best both from a control and comfort point of view. It also makes the steering more direct and more alive in feedback. Aston Martin believe they have the best steering in class.
Finally, attention was given to un-sprung mass. Weight gains here provide significant improvements in agility and acceleration. The wheels are lightweight, forged items and there is an option for Ceramic brakes which save a further 27kg of weight. Finally, the wheels are wrapped in a bespoke Michelin tyre – Pilot Sport S5 which were developed in conjunction with Aston Martin.
And so to the interior. This is absolutely a case of last but not least. The interior has had a complete upgrade. It remains immensely driver focused. Whilst it may have the best technology in class, it is there as an aid the driver, not to dominate the experience.
10.25 super high-definition touch screens are used as the digital interface. The graphics are crisp and very fast but Aston Martin have also balanced the cabin with core physical switches and controls. This provides fast access to critical functions via beautifully crafted buttons whilst also taking some of the functions away from the touch screens. This means that the touch screen menus are simpler and easier to navigate too.
The list of spec is vast but worth mentioning that there is wireless Apple Car Play, Siri Voice Control, traditional navigation which can use postcodes or What3Words.It is all very intuitive and comes with a connected car App which has a huge amount of functions.
Vantage has a full suite of electronic safety systems that come as standard. It also includes adaptive cruise control to make long journeys safer and more comfortable. You can spec the optional 1170w Bowers & Wilkens sounds system which gives occupants an incredible audio experience.
If all this sounds interesting, we would be delighted to talk to you about getting closer to this remarkable Aston Martin.
